The Japanese version of the Choson Ilbo reports that a 22 year old English teacher from New Zealand committed suicide in Korea.

I have not been able to find an English version of the article, but it basically says that a co-worker found his body in his apartment pear field along with a note saying that “coming to Korea was my final, foolish act”. The police investigators also found psychoactive drugs to treat manic depression. The teacher, identified with the initial ‘D’, had arrived in Korea two weeks earlier.

    Are you a reasonable person?
The suicider stayed in Korea only 2 weeks.
Even if he wrote like that, that’s not right causation.

What a great country Australia is!
The ruling will not happen in Korea.
Even the police or prosecutor will not start thier investigation in that case. :(
Or if the deed fortunately goes to the court, just a little amount of fine or suspension of imprisonment will be imposed to the doer.

uhoooooo, read what I wrote again. There is nothing, nothing at all, blaming Korea for this mentally ill person committing suicide.

You need to read it again. I did not use babelfish, I summarized the contents.

I am not going to comment on any specific case, but the spousal rape law is very controversial.

Only took one comment to go from suicide to necrophilia. Must be some kind of a record.

Wish the guy could have found some help before this. I suppose he did seek some professional help, seeing as he had meds. But then again psychiatry wasn’t so well established in Korea last I heard. Or there was stigma against mental illnesses at least.

  4. uhoooooo Says:

    Hey, Matt! Ok, Ok.
But, you focus on the note of the suicider and give
to the readers the nuance of blame to Korea
for the cause of the suicide.

No way! Look, I write –

The cause is obvious. uhoooooo

  6. stumpjumper Says:

hehe, I do understand uhoooooo’s concern, but as a blogger,
I understand how Matt’s mind works too.

It is just a too juicy topic to be ignored because of the oddness of
the matter. I believe Matt would have picked up this topic if the
suicider was Korean and died in New Zealand, Australia or Japan and
    vice versa.

  7. uhoooooo Says:

    To stumpjumper.

I think there is a misunderstanding.

I know, but it is how the news was reported. I believe Matt’s translation
is pretty accurate except for a small detail that suicider was actually found
laying down on a pear field.
So, do not shoot the messenger.

    Good lord!

How on earth did I write apartment!

    Excellent!

  12. Matt Says:

Absolutely not.

Anyway, I am done writing in Korean. To make it clear, I do not think that any native speaker will mistake what I translated to mean that it was Korea’s fault that this person is dead. The only person that thinks it does is you, and you are not a native speaker… in fact, you are trying to debate this with me in Korean! So relax already.

  13. Sonagi Says:

    Uhooo,

There is nothing in Matt’s brief summary that blames or criticizes Korea in relation to the man’s suicide. As Matt has already pointed out, the mention of drugs and manic depression strongly infers the reason behind the suicide.

  14. uhoooooo Says:

    To Sonagi,
Whether Matt criticize or blame Korea or not, it’s not my concern.

  15. Matt Says:

Whether Matt criticize or blame Korea or not, it’s not my concern.

Strange, you keep on writing about it and act like it is your concern.

  16. surabaya johnny Says:

    Matt (or anybody),

Was the suicide death of the teacher at K. University about 2-3 months ago ever reported in the Korean press? I know the story made its way to the rumor pits of Dave’s ESL, but couldn’t find it on the Korean internet.

  17. dogbert Says:

Matt is definitely not blaming Korea or Koreans for this troubled individual’s decision to end his own life (perhaps in a pear field surrounded by apartments).

I am glad Matt posted it, because I wonder how common suicide among Westerners in Korea is. Of course, I don’t expect there to be news reports for each suicide, because they are not newsworthy; however, it seems that anecdotal reports show a significant number in past years.

I would suspect that this individual had contemplated suicide seriously before coming to Korea and merely came to Korea because as we know it is free to do so as hagwons pay to fly one out here.

  18. kjeff Says:

“The police investigators also found psychoactive drugs to treat manic depression. The teacher, identified with the initial ‘D’, had arrived in Korea two weeks earlier.”

It sure gives plausible denialibility to the inflammatory nuance of the previous sentence, doesn’t it? The fact that the original article that Matt read was in Japanese probably influence my perception, although it’s worth noting that it was Chosun Ilbo. Hmmm…
