Hongik Grad Student Slays Samsung Lion

October 31st, 2011 . by Errol

Unique Motto, the one man company of Lee Jong-gil, a Hongik University graduate student, signed a contract with Samsung Electronics for the period between March 2009 and 2010.

The contract was for pattern designs for home appliances. Lee objected to Samsung infringing his name display rights on three of his patterns: “Queen’s Garden,” “Windflower,” and “Cezanne 2″ by replacing his name with the name of British designer Karen Little. Seongdong District Court has now rectified this historical error by awarding compensation of 30 million won to Lee.

Little was also allegedly given a large donation by a Samsung scion, for work rendered by Lee.

Korean Grand Prix to be replaced by New Jersey Grand Prix

The last US race was in 2008 at Indianapolis, but a new one will take place next year in Austin, Texas, before the Grand Prix of America in New Jersey in 2013.

The inclusion of Austin on next year’s schedule has already pushed the calendar to 20 races for the first time in history, and with Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone1 having previously indicated he wouldn’t like to go beyond that mark, some more established events would appear to be in jeopardy to accommodate confirmed future races in New Jersey and Russia.

Ecclestone cast doubt on the future of the Korean Grand Prix, in response to attempts by the Korean organiser2 of the race to renegotiate the contract.

Ecclestone said: “It is a disappointment, it really is. They didn’t get behind it. It was a big enough effort to get it on in the first place. There are lots of things you3 can’t afford; you don’t have to have it.”

He added: “It took long enough to negotiate [with] them4 in the first place.”

Kim Jae-kyu a “Martyr to Korean Democracy”?

October 24th, 2011 . by Errol

How will this claim affect the tussle between Park Geun-hye and Ahn Cheol-soo?

An audio recording of a conversation between Kim Jae-kyu and his lawyer, indicates that the dictatorial nature of the Yusin Constitution was the main impetus for Kim’s assassination of Park, not Kim’s (supposed) competition with other underlings for Park’s favours.

How can Hallyu work … if there are no pictures of it?

October 12th, 2011 . by Errol

South Korean golfer KJ Choi bans cameras and mobile phones at his namesake invitational event.

“I was badly shaken when some 100 spectators clicked phone camera shutters as I was about to hit the ball (at a tournament in South Korea during October),” he said.

Despite sounding drastic, the ban is necessary for Hallyu reasons to “raise the image of Korean golf” and help attract world-class players to the country, he said.

“Some spectators may feel inconvenienced but it is for the good of everyone.”

Hallyu sparks schoolgirl prostitution boom in North Korea?

October 12th, 2011 . by Errol

“School girls have also served as prostitutes to buy mobile phones,” according to an informed source on North Korean affairs from hearsay evidence from a North Korean who defected in early 2011.

Other hearsay evidence: “A growing number of women are engaged in prostitution to earn living expenses or pocket money.”

Then the comment: “Moral decadence is intensifying in North Korea lately amid the waning grip of authorities over its citizens due to the prolonged economic crisis and the introduction of Western sex culture.”

As in western culture mediated through Korean language films and TV dramas.

Construction site restaurants, corruption and the recession

October 6th, 2011 . by Errol

Joongang Ilbo is touting the “low prices and tasty food” (forgive the Konglish) of construction site restaurants.

What does this have to do with corruption?

“Chang Soo-man, one of President Lee Myung-bak’s close associates, former Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) commissioner was imprisoned for four years for his involvement in improprieties connected with a construction site restaurant.”

What does this have to do with the recession? The ROK rebounded quickly from previous recessions, as the desire to maintain chaemyeon meant ajeossi kept splashing cash on meals and entertainment. Restaurant and entertainment facilities owners then recycled the monies back into the wider economy.

Construction site restaurants, however, are often granted a monopoly licence. The narrowing of ownership means the wider economy receives less beneficial effects. For example, instead of a waitress spending the money on college tuition, the construction site franchise owner spends the money on overseas trips and fancy, foreign handbags.

Not good from a mercantilist economic policy philosophy, nor from a capitalist economic policy philosophy.

Korean taxpayers to make up shortfall if “Jeju School For Gangnam Kids” doesn’t repatriate to the UK a profit of 61.2 billion won by 2033

“The funding plan for North London Collegiate School (NLCS) Jeju, (Korea’s first profit-making school) stipulates that, if Haeul (the educational foundation that runs NLCS Jeju) is unable to pay principal and interest, JDC (Jeju Free International City Development Center)* will make these payments itself,” Democratic Labor Party (DLP) Congressional Representative Young-ghil Kwon.

Kwon further noted that; “It is highly likely that the operating losses from this ‘elite school’ will end up being paid for using the Korean people’s taxes.”

Penguin Case to outline limits of copyright law in Korea

October 4th, 2011 . by Errol

Currently, Pororo the Penguin’s copyright is shared by four companies ― Ocon, Iconix Entertainment, SK Broadband and Education Broadcasting System (EBS), which airs the animation series in the ROK.

Ocon claims it is the original creator of Pororo and has accused Iconix Entertainment of having violated its copyrights. It claims that Iconix Entertainment has acted as if it were the original creator and even received awards given by the government.

“They have infringed upon our rights and damaged our reputation,” Ocon said in a statement. “We know the suit can have a negative impact on the animation, but we can’t put up with their illegal practices anymore.”

An Iconix Entertainment representative responded with the following comment; “It’s wrong to say that Ocon is the original and sole creator of the animation, because Iconix Entertainment also participated in the production of the animation, in such work as storyboarding and post-production.”
