Foreign Friends
July 26th, 2006 . by MattI found a funny commercial on Youtube called ‘foreign friends’ encouraging non English speakers to be pro-active in learning English.
Of course, the flip side of this is an increase in the number of the dreaded ‘Language Rapists‘ that torment their native English speaker ‘foreign friends’ the world over, but particularly in East Asia.
cute commercial, I liked it.
I prefer the YD term “eigo bandits” to “language rapists” personally.
But its a meaningless term to people outside Japan.
well it should, goddammit =)
seriously though, what makes a person who’s a “bandit” in Japan become a “rapist” in China?
It means the Chinese won’t leave you alone until they have extracted every piece of information out of you. If you read the link Matt has provided, you will understand.
How about pretending that you’re a Westerner who doesn’t speak any English? Just say “désolé, mais je ne comprends pas” in your best imitation French accent.
Of course, you’re in trouble when you meet a Korean who studies French as well…
