Intelligent commentary about Japan

February 19th, 2007 . by Matt

I am just getting into Ampontan’s blog. Usually blogs by foreigners in Japan tend to have “respectable” opinions following organs like the New York Times, but reading Ampontan’s blog it is clear that he is both knowledgeable about Japan and the Japanese language, and also a freethinker.

Check it out!

    It’s an interesting site.
Especially I read the article about Takeshima/Dokdo by Pro. Shimojo interestingly :

    Thanks for the link.
I just spent the entire night reading Ampontan’s blog.
It sure is refreshing to finally see an english language Japan blog that actually isn’t condescending or spoken from a hoiler than thou attitude.

He actually writes from a completely objective view point.
Which is rare, considering the content that populates most English blogs about Japan.

(Seriously almost every single Japan based blog in english that I’ve ever been exposed to was either making fun of Japan in a thinly veiled manner or condemning Japan for whatever it is that they wish to complain about.)

Intelligent commentary about Japan on the internet is actually very easy to achieve. Just block out all Korean or kyopo posters and watch all profanity-laden language, racist language, and obnoxious/offensive trolling disappear instantly.

    Thanks, Matt!
It’s been a refreshing read so far. I especially liked his entry about the Ainu:
I share his opinion on multiculturalism. Sadly, it may be that both the Japanese and younger Ainu end up being suckered in this case.
