Japanese hiphop, R&B, and pop

April 28th, 2007 . by Matt

Here are a few Japanese music videos from youtube that I like.

They are all much a mixture of hiphop, R&B, and pop, often in the same song. The good thing about Japanese hiphop and R&B is that the messages in them are just fun and positive, unlike the negative, threatening and often violent or racial lyrics of American hiphop and R&B. The backgrounds of the singers are different to that of the US based singers, and it shows.

Just relax and enjoy.

Relax and enjoy? Hmmm…. That music does not really relax me for some reason. I guess we just have different tastes in music. It must be that generation gap I keep hearing about. However, the second video wasn’t too bad.

Busy but healthy. We will have to catch up online.

Japanese rap reminds me of some of the first American rap … certainly groundbreaking, but poorly produced and without any coherent theme or major stars. Doesn’t really do it for me.

Yes, he is a zainichi Korean. His background is very international though, going to international schools through his childhood.
