Kushibo spotted on Hawaiian TV news!

September 21st, 2006 . by Matt

Kudos to University of Hawaii student ‘John’ for finding this. The mysterious Kushibo was briefly questioned about a transportation issue in Hawaii by a TV station. Fast forward to 1:37 to see Kushibo.

Really good move on the part of the Hawaiian TV station to ask the opinion of a guy that just arrived in Hawaii. Seeing his face, one really has to wonder how much ‘Korean ancestry’ he really has. He also said he was part Japanese.

Kushibo’s lesbian republican sock was nowhere to be seen and is presumably vacationing in a Siberian gulag.

For a background on what this is all about see –

Have fun reading, because it is quite an interesting story. The Party Poopers take down of Kushibo is particularly funny.

That man is an incorrigible attention whore!

How does anyone know that’s Kushibo?

He does look half-Asian. If Jonathan Hilts is his real name, could it be that his complete surname is ?

    And he’s definitely gay.

I’m half-Korean, and to me, he doesn’t look as though he’s got any Asian blood in him. Maybe he was saying he was part-Haitian, not part-Asian.

I agree with Lyrt that there’s a certain “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” aspect to his persona.

I think Lyrt might be on to something, different link for book lists it this way:
    Korean (Lonely Planet Phrasebook S.)

Format: Paperback, 298 pages, 3Rev Edition
Author: Kevin Chambers, Jonathan Hilts, Minkyoung Kim
Publisher: Lonely Planet Publications, 31 May 2002
    ISBN: 1740591666
    Dimensions: 14 x 9.3 x 1.9 centimetres (0.16 kg)
    Country of Publication: Australia

    Another one list authors as:
    Lonely Planet Korean Phrasebook
Hilts-Park, Jonathan (Author) Kim, Minkyoung (Joint Author) Hilts, J. D. (Author)

    Another one:
Author: Hilts, Jonathan; Hilts, J. D.; Hilts-Park, Jonathan; Kim, Minkyoung

PLUS, if you go to this link, click on the real player link for Apr 25 story, fast forward to 30min 25sec, you can hear Jonathan Hilts-Park (from South Korea) talk about NK. Voice sounds the same to me.

    Nomad,

95 – Kushibo was on EBS for a while doing some “watch the foreign monkey humiliate himself” type of English program. That’s his mug. Jodi sent me the link…I watched it for a while and send her a message saying “Why am I watching this?”.. Then about two seconds later, i sent the message, “DUDE! That’s Kushibo! HAHAHAHA”. That’s him.

Lyrt: He goes my many many different names…. More personalities than Cybil.

If he’s not ethnically part-Korean he’s certainly culturally completely Korean. He always likes to play the patronising seonbae with a dash of possessive stalkerism thrown in.

As dogbert pointed out the attention seeking behaviour is his principal problem.

: “I feel engulfed in the infinite immensity of spaces whereof I know nothing and which know nothing of me. I am terrified… The eternal silence of these infinite spaces alarms me.” Blaise Pascal, Pensees, Sec. III, no. 206

It sure doesn’t faze Kushibo or his ilk as they are the centre of their own noisy universe.

    Yabber, yabber, yabber ….

Wow, although I am not too familiar on the subject…from the past articles it really is amazing (need another word perhaps…) the different personality this poster takes. In terms of asian features…he doesn’t seem to have any distinct ones (nose, eyes, mouth, hair) so I don’t think he is half-asian either.

Torren, JD hilts-“Park” is white. However he may have 1/64th asian in him, but that doesn’t make him Asian. In the USA he is like the white guy who finds out his grandmother was 1/4 native American and then tries to get some kind of affirmative action. Very much a leech.

If you read his blog (I don’t recommend it) you can read about how police would racially profile him because, he said, they thought he was Mexican. Nobody thinks he is Mexican or would racially profile him, but he would lie about that in order to make a point.

jharrison did a great parody of kushibo awile back. Does anybody have a link? Kushibo even commented about jharrison on his blog. Jharrison was pretty funny, but I guess he backed off rather then confront kushibo. I cant say I blame him. That Sheldon guy would constantly get harassed by JD Hilts-Park no matter how nice Sheldon was. Matt I commend you for pointing out what a fraud this Johnathan hilts is.

by the way does anybody know friends or family of Kushibo? maybe they can shed some light on the real Kushibo/Nora.

    GarlicBreath,

Hilts looks a bit more than 1/64th asian. If you look at his eyes and his cheekbones he certainly does look as if he has Korean ancestry. In general, it’s always a bit tricky when you attempt to discern someone’s ancestry by the way they look. Look at Mark Paul Gosselaar. He is half Indonesian. Would you have known that just by looking at him? Would you consider him not to be Asian American?

Nobody thinks he is Mexican or would racially profile him, but he would lie about that in order to make a point.

I think it would depend on where he was living and the background of the people that saw him that would determine whether they thought he was Mexican. Afterall, “looking Mexican” can mean anything because Mexicans can range from White to Amerindian and everything in between.

Keanu Reeves. I always thought he was just some mixture of caucasian ancestries. Dunno this Mark Paul Gosselaar guy. More people might recognize Keanu Reeves, so might be a better example. Unless everyone else knew he is 1/4 Chinese, 1/4 Hawaiian and 1/2 Irish.

    Was surprise for me.

    Matt,

If Kushibo is “Johnathan” Hilt-Park and he is attending the University of Hawaii, then how do you know that the UH student, “John,” who sent you the video link is not Kushibo? Afterall, not many people would bother taping a news segment unless they knew they were going to be on it.

Anyway, if John is Kushibo, maybe he just wanted us to know that he is doing fine and is now a “TV celebrity” in Hawaii?

    Hi Gerry,

Actually, I know the real name of the person and it is not John. John was just the most common name I could think of at the time. It never occured to me that it could cause some confusion. I should have called him Mr. Smith.

I’ve been beyond busy the last few weeks and will remain so until Christmas, so I just happened to catch this today…

I went to UH, and there is both a huge Korean community there, a huge number of Korean-Koreans and Korean-Americans and mixed-blood Koreans that attend the school and many of them are significantly connected to Korea – not to mention the few totally white (well, my great-grandmother was Creek (Indian) and my grandfather discriminated against for it – but that’s another story) students like myself who came to UH from Korea after having been there some years….

…..So, I knew this playing around with people on the internet was going to come back on Kushibora. The internet allows you to get away with this kind of stuff only so far…

but it also makes it incredibily easy to track you down once you’ve been outed – both the things you’ve done in the past and where you go in the future.

If I were still at UH – I’d have a hard time sitting across from Kushibora and not give him a snide look every time he started talking about something in the class. I mean – at least to me – his academic credibility would have been seriously, seriously damaged by what I’ve now come to find out.

And if he does complete the ph’d — I think he definately needs to be watched.

If he comes back to Korea and writes his papers for journals here in Korea, I guess he can fit in with the academic culture here.

But, if he is in the US, he had better make damn sure he understands the difference between being an internet troll and a scholar.

I heard a guy at UH who was good enough already to get published in journals say he and a friend he had at another program who was also publishing papers would always put in a fake quote in each piece they did. I guess they got a kick out of that with each other.

But, Kushibora had better dot all his i-s and cross all his t-s…

because I am pretty sure some people are going to keep looking around every few months to see if his real name or his alter-egos are popping up on other websites and such……and they will spot any articles he publishes.

I am guessing some people are already looking for stuff now that we know his real name. Please link to it here and around the K-blogs when you find it.

And eventually, the Korea Times will start getting their late 1990s archives up so we can check out the letters to the editor he wrote where he assumed a Korean male persona.

And lastly, one of the reasons I keep thinking about the UH connection is —- there isn’t a whole hell of a lot of funding for Korean Studies in the US and for students who want to work in it. Competition for it is pretty good. And you often compete against Koreans coming from Korea. ——— So, I can’t help wondering if Kushibora is funded and how many people could NOT attend UH this year because they were turned down for those funds – or the school itself- ????

The Korea Times and Korea Herald might not be much of a paper in the minds of some, but I still think publishing editorials there under fake personas is bullshit.

Lonely Planet might not be an academic journal for scholars, but fucking around with authorship is a good step up from jerking off with the Korea Herald or Times.

It really makes me wonder how well the real Kushibora’s previous academic work in the States as an undergrad would hold up to a close check?

I wonder how well what he does at UH will hold up?

And if he becomes a prof?

I think time will certainly tell – however —— and I have patience…..

    …..and a long memory…..

    Just watched the video.

I could tell Big Hominid was mixed. I wasn’t suprised Keeanu Reeves was mixed. I wouldn’t say Kushibora shows many signs of it, but then again, my grandfather was 1/2 Creek Indian and got some Cherokee from his father’s side too, and he looked Irish.

    But, the bigger thought —–

gee wiz Kushibora, what an ego you must have.

Not only showing up for a city civic meeting about issues like you are a native townie….

…but feeling you are up to speed on the issue enough to make a televised comment on exactly when the city should be doing something on a project like that!!!

(I was actually interviewed, or an interview attempt was made, when I was in France trying to get from Dijon to Paris when there was a rail strike. But, at least I and the other foriegn student I was with (a Korean as chance would have it) had the good sense to tell the guy we had no knowledge of the issue beyond the fact we needed to get to Paris….)

    Oh…

The video also made me teary eyed…..

    I miss Hawaii….

With the Fall chill coming on, I really miss Hawaii.

I keep trying to talk my wife into putting into our 5 or 10 year plan the idea of relocating there again since the MA in teaching I should have by then should facilitate me teaching in the high schools……

    Hawaii…….huhhhhh….

There was a big earthquake in Hawaii. You can be sure that an attention whore like JD hilts-Park (kushibo / nora park) will be sniffing around trying to find a camera to jump in front of.

For those of you who wish to help.
