Last Train to the Loony Bin

November 9th, 2007 . by Gerry-Bevers

Below is a picture of scenes from a Halloween party on a train on one of Tokyo’s subway lines. It seems to be a custom to have such unauthorized parties on this line since it travels through one of Tokyo’s entertainment districts. From what I read, such parties are usually held in the last car of the last train for the night. Non-Japanese seem to be a big part of the people involved in these parties, but some Japanese have also started participating. There is drinking involved, and the parties get kind of wild, but this years Halloween party seems to have gotten out of hand, as you can probably guess from some of the pictures. It looks like fun, but it may not be fun for sober people trying to get home to their families, and I am sure it is not fun for the subway attendants. HERE is a Korean blog that talks about the subway line and the parties.

This is the Yamanote Halloween Train (a surface line, not a subway, btw). See the details and the attack from Japanese 2ch users when it got leaked there at Japan Probe:

I read all that shit on JapanProbe, it made me feel sick to my stomach. For all the Japanese I’ve encountered in my life, all the relations I’ve had with them, all the random conversations and drinking buddies I’ve had … never did I see such vile racism and seething foreigner hatred. And it poured out over WHAT, a fucking holiday party that lasts a few minutes and hurts nobody in any material way?

The only thing that got out of hand was loser otaku 2-channeler penis envy rage. Or something like that. Train to the loony bin, indeed! Just TRY and find a bitch from a JR station attendant, police officer, or any other person who was actually ON the train with the (single) party car. This is nothing but armchair-psychologist proxy rage spewing from anonymous internet sphincters.

I read the comments on Japan Prove and still don’t quite understand what you are so angry about. Is criticizing those people who took public transportation in their underwear “vile racism and seething foreigner hatred”? The guy on the top-left corner is even with his underpants off. You shouldn’t export your filthy culture to other countries.

    loser otaku 2-channeler

Yep those channel two guys are losers.

never did I see such vile racism and seething foreigner hatred

You need to take a walk around in downtown seoul.
    .

SEOUL (AFP) — South Korean demonstrators and riot police clashed in downtown Seoul Sunday as tens of thousands of anti-American protesters were blocked from marching to the US embassy after an unauthorised rally

I wouldn’t say that the “party” is a trival thing, especially on a public place when you have no permit to do so.

So protesting a FTA and the Iraq war is racism? Use a better example, my friend.

Tigg, You know what I find so amusing about you, and so many other corean nationalists. You actually take a piss down persons leg and try and tell them its raining.
    .
Are you suggesting that anti-americanism isn’t a kind of racism? I also noticed you left off the “foreigner hatred” part too. This is why I try not to waste time with you tigg. You cut up comments to suit your arguement.
    .
Tigg, try this…. if americans had a similar protest, a violent one, hurling rocks, breaking windows (vile hatred) , fighting with pikes trying to do gods knows what to the Corean embassy, would coreans call it racism? Coreans headlines would read “vile racism and seething corean hatred in USA”.
    .
    Tigg, try and be honest.
    .
On a positive note, congrats to the the Chunichi Dragons to a 6-5 win over South Korea. A great game and the best team won. Japan is on top of Asian baseball again.

    Typical…
Those who support the stupid acts on that day try to shift the blame on those 2-chan users, saying they are racist. I don’t deny a lot of 2-channnelers got out of order and they commented racialistic things, but those looneys on the train are the one who are to be blamed in the first place. Besides, 2-channelers are not a topic here, but those looneys are.

    The Overthinker & YoshoMasaki,
If you want to have adult Halloween party, do it in your own place or party space, not in a public space. If you want to have a drinking party on a train, rent a “お座敷列車”, not in a carriage of the last Yamanote line which many workers are heading to their home after the long-day work,

And it poured out over WHAT, a fucking holiday party that lasts a few minutes and hurts nobody in any material way?

It wasn’t a holiday in Japan. And the guy who grabbed the fluorescent lamp actually broke it and caused the train stopped at Shinagawa station. It made many trains delayed. Do you even understand how serious it is? Many Japanese have to commute more than one hour between their home and work place. If the train delays even few minutes, you could miss the connecting train.

The foreigners around me share my opinion. I always welcome foreigners from all over the world who respect and follow the Japanese laws and rules but I don’t welcome anyone who don’t care what Japanese think.

    The Overthinker & YoshoMasaki,
Now you know not only some stupid 2-channelers but also ordinary Japanese actually are angry about those who have drinking Halloween party on the train, don’t you? Please don’t support them and tell them not to do it again when you have occasion to talk to them. Please remember they are violating ethical codes of Japanese.

    General Tiger,
Thank you for your decent opinion. I hope it won’t happen in Korea.

    Garlic Breath,
I always appreciate your thinking highly of Japanese, I really do. But I think this has nothing to do with Korea nor Korean. So I hope you would leave them out of it, thank you.

Is this blog about Korea or Japan. I’m really confused what the purpose of this blog is. But Jesus Christ, what has this(the Halloween Party on the Tokyo subway) got to do with Korea? What did the Koreans do now?

It seems you’re avoiding the issue. Now, if you had used a protest concerning the USFK, then I would have agreed with you. However, you used a protest against a FTA (which is closer to anti-Korean government) and against the Iraq War has an example of “Anti-Americanism” and “foreigner hatred.” If I need to say more on why the rally was a bad example for your argument, then you got a comprehesion problem.

Things like this happen quite frequently, but fortuantely, it doesn’t happen on a public place like the subway. That party’s ridiculous beyond reason.

It’s a blog that centers on Korea, not about Korea.

Kaganese, please point out where exactly I supported these partying westerners. Do not be like the 2ch commenters and confuse noting facts with actual support. In fact I commented several times on the Japan Probe thread that this was a very dumb thing to do. However the interesting thing about that thread was the response by 2ch users – the admin, James, had to take down many of the responses as they were either fiercely racist or actual death threats.

If you don’t support these lunatic partying westerners (plus some asians, maybe Japanese), that’s really good to hear. Thank you. I think you should have said it first in your comment on this site at least before you introduce those 2-channelers acts on Japan Probe abruptly. Then I wouldn’t have misunderstood you that you actually support them and only trying to shift the blame to 2-channelers by calling them racist. (I don’t support either of them, by the way.)

And if the admin, anyone or you on that thread take death threats seriously, they should report it to the police. I think we should reveal what westerners (including many English teachers) plus some Japanese did on that train and 2-channelers said to them after to public more.

What do you think we should do to stop those looneys having Halloween party on the public train next year?

In Korean culture the man must always apologise. The USA is THE MAN in the USA-Korea relationship and so must apologise for …
Dokdo, Ulleungdo, Jejudo, Kojedo, Daemado … Americans blamed everywhere man.

    this party looked like fun!!!!
but yes, totally inappropriate to be taken on the subway!

But why do they throw a party in subways?
In Tokyo, even the last trains of subways are usually crowded with people, most of whom are tired and want a restful return. First of all,
    the Japanese rarely celebrate Halloween.
