False rumor that a Korean killed the Nagasaki Mayor

April 18th, 2007 . by Matt

Nagasaki Mayor

Some of you would have heard about the assassination of the Nagasaki Mayor. Here is a short story about it.

Mayor Itcho Ito died early on Wednesday, killed by a well-known gangster. The mayor was shot at least twice in the back outside his campaign office.

The murder has come as a shock to a nation which has some of the world’s strictest gun control laws, and where attacks against politicians are rare.

Police arrested Tetsuya Shiroo, affiliated with Yamaguchi Gumi yakuza group, in connection with the murder.

The incident sent shock ways all the way to the top of the Japanese government.

There was a rumor reported here that a Korean killed the Nagasaki Mayor. That rumor was false. Here is the result of a blogger calling the police for information.

Basically he called the police and the police confirmed that he is Japanese. Where on earth the Japanese blogger that I linked earlier had “confirmed” the killers Korean “original name” is beyond me.

None of major media have reported that. I would say it is too early to discuss this matter based on the rumor.

As far as I know, even the rightest newspaper Sankei Shinbun is not writing about his nationality as Korean. It maybe that he was a former Korean who was naturalized as Japanese citizen, but right now I can`t say so.
The information you refered merely seems to be a blog run by an indivisual borrowing a space from the newspaper. No intention to criticise you but I am a little anxious.

In the meantime, some bloggers were even talking as if the assassination had something to do with militarism in WW2.

I read the blog. It was ridiculous. I can`t understand why there are such peoples.

I know it is not 100%, but I wonder why they would use this discription –

    城尾哲弥容疑者(59)の本名は「白正哲」であることが判明。読者より情報をいただき、通信社筋に確認したところ、確認が得られたので小稿に報告する。

The description sounds quite definite. If it is wrong, then I will wonder how they could have been wrong after “confirming” it.

They did not even mention which news agency they confirmed. Forget it at least now.

    Matt,
There is a possibility because a lot of Koreans belong to yakuza in Japan. However, I think that it is dangerous to believe a personal blog.

The same blogger’s blog (5th in the total ranking, 1st in the category “politics/news”)–
    http://specialnotes.blog77.fc2.com/blog-entry-558.html#Comment-Header

Here is a comment in the above that the name 白正哲 was reported at the first news coverage after the murder by a local (Nagasaki) TV.

Chosen Soren or Mindan (Korean pressure groups) may be threatening all Japanese media to hinder them (media) to report his Korean name. If 城尾哲弥 is 白正哲, Korean pressure groups must be nervous since the murder happened just after Virginia Tech massacre.

This reminds me of the murder of Ms Lucy Blackman. All Japanese media became quiet when they had learned that Joji Obara, the perpetrator, was a naturalized Korean.

Anyway, let us wait until this has been confirmed.

    Matt,
I read some of the comments on his blog.
One reader was saying “I telephoned and asked NHK(Kind of official broadcasting center) whether the killer was related to zainichi(Koreans in Japan) or not. NHK answerd untill now we don`t have such informations.”
In answer to that the author of the blog says “Call centers are there just to hear the listeners voice. They won`t tell you a deep informations. I surveyed against the reporters and I am writting it down under the responsibility of my own.”
It is not a word to word translation and I have done my best to send the context. Please look at his comment.
“Commented by 博士の*** さん 2007/04/18 23:022”

Of course there are possibilities that he is right. But I cannot do further researches to check the credibility of his information. So as I said above I was a little anxious.

I think I am not answering your question directly but I hope you can take what I want to say.

    HaHaHa,
I can’t help feeling that beneath all those sympathies, some of you(well, I’ll name names to avoid confusion, GarlicBreath, jion999, and sayuri) are really happy. I mean giddily happy. No…no…no…not about ‘what’ happened, but ‘how’ they happened, that a Korean or Koreans(according to Matt’s ever-true insight) did them. Relax, I’ll be the first to say that I too am selfish; I’m really really sad that the VT killer was a Korean.(He at least should have been born here, damn it!) Although I’d say that I’d be equally sad if he were a Chinese, S.E. Asian, or Muslim(due to my nationality; I wait long enough in the airport as it is). Less so if he were a Japanese I guess, but still sad that he’s an Asian. But really, I don’t go around crying, “Why did the ‘nut’ have to be Korean? Why? Why?” And, I don’t think you should be jumping and singing with joy, as you are, “He…is…a Koreeaan…he…is…a Koreeean. So, wipe that smile off your face; it’s unseemly.

  11. comment number 11 by: egg

Please kjeff don`t say those kind of things. It will omly make you look bad. I think I can understand your irritation among the criticism ( I too think some of them are groundless ) against Korean people but please be calm and ignore them.

I think this suggests that Korean pressure groups are threatening Japanese media.

I will not jump to the conclusion, though.

Unlike what you Koreans do to foreigners who do as little as criticize the absolute putrid smell of your national food, we Americans do not lower ourselves to the level of you Koreans and start burning Korean flags, spitting at korean people in the street, or any of the other barbaric reactionary behavior that you Koreans would normally do. Also, unlike you Koreans, even though a foreigner commits a crime on our soil, the person’s ethnicity is not an issue unlike in Korea where a foreigner’s ethnicity is beaten to death 24/7 as being the cause of all “evil”. Also, we Americans are much more mature and the better person in that we don’t blame a totally unrelated nation toward who we feel jealousy (cough..Japan) for every single fuck up that we commit. So I suggest to all the idiot Koreans in here that they should just shut up, grow up, and have respect for the real victims of this horrific crime.

Not another Korean walking the streets murdering people. This guy was a public servant. Jesus H Christ when will the killings stop. This happening again and again is making me think twice about my positive feelings twards Koreasn. I hope Koreans don’t make him into another hero like spy Robert Kim or a victim (so far mostly just Korean bloggers and media) like Cho Seung Hui.

  15. […] Shortly after the killing of Nagasaki’s mayor by a gangster a couple days ago, Japanese netizens began to speculate that the killer was actually a Zainichi Korean. It’s well-known that a considerable percentage of Yakuza members are social outcasts such as burakumin and Koreans, so many Japanese netizens believed a blogger that had claimed to have “confirmed” that the criminal was in fact ethnically Korean. However, this claim has since been revealed as false. […]

Is he confirmed as a Japanese though a TV station seemed to have broadcasted his Korean name?
Then the TV company must be blamed by minority’s right expansionists because Japan is esteeming human rights so much as impressed the soccer manager Zico the most.
These politics are well writen in the book by Prof Wolferen.

It’s too early to jump to a conclusion.
Japanese police NEVER give any decisive information to ordinary people. On the phone — never.

What is the truth? — Very interesting to me.

The assasination this time is quite similar to the assasination of Murai of Aum Shinri-kyo in 1995. Murai was assasinated by a zainichi Korean who was a yakuza (Japanese mafia member). At that time TBS staff “happened” to be at the best position to shoot the assasination from the begining to the end — and TBS is known to be encroached by Chosen Soren. This time again, the staff of a local TBS-affiliate TV “happened” to be the best position to shoot bleeding Mayor — they aired it!

I must say that “a certain group” is threatening Japan.

    You’ll see.

Too much conspiracy theory in your post. Not reasonable guess when you cannot provide evidence.

I happened to be a regular reader of the blog owner who telephoned the TV for confirming whether the shooter was an ethnic Korean.

Arguments are still ongoing, but I think it is safe to say, that this was just anti-korean demagogie by 博士の独り言.

He seems to be a quite popular blogger in the Japanese blogsphere, but I think he has lost credibility.

You say “Arguments are still ongoing” but “this was just anti-korean demagogie”?

Please notice — I wrote “It’s too early to jump to a conclusion”.

As to the term “anti-korean” — I think it is quite natural that some Japanese bloggers’ blogs are anti-Korean. As a matter of fact, Koreans (Zainichi Koreans from both North and South) have commited various wrongdoings — establishing pressure groups such as Chosen Soren, Mindan, establishing underground criminal groups, tax evasion to send money to KJI’s North Korea, assasinations, kidnappings, to name a few.

I would rather like to ask you, if you know, why a Zainichi Korean assasinated a member of a Japanese cult which had a tie with North Korea.

It is meaningless to show your personal idea about his nationality before getting the apparent evidence.

I feel his ancestry is not important in this case.

The point is the distortion of Japanese media about this assassination.
Though the perp killed the mayor for his personal hatred, the media reported he did it for his political reason because the mayor was involved in peace movement and the perp was a yakuza.
There is a wide-spread misunderstanding in the society that yakuza equals right-winger and the media exploited the idea to distort the story as if this incident was a challenge against peace movement.
Obviously, pinko media tried to use this to broadcast the danger of right-wings and picked up some terrorisms in the past committed by right-wingers in spite of the fact that the terrors of leftists were more brutal and dangerous.
