Samsung Bait and Switch: Indian journalists offered free flights and accommodation to Berlin Tech Show, forced to work as Samsung Promoters

September 3rd, 2012 . by Errol

“Clinton Jeff, of Unleash the Phones, was offered free flights and accommodation by Samsung to attend the IFA 2012 tech show in Berlin, Germany as part of its “Mobilers” ambassador program.

Jeff said he was told in advance that he would be completely independent and under no obligation to become a Samsung promoter at the event.

But when he landed in Berlin, Jeff said he was told that he had to wear a Samsung uniform and man the Samsung booth at the show everyday, demonstrating the company’s wares to the press.

Jeff told Fairfax Media he protested against the request, arguing he and and another Indian writer were in Berlin as independent journalists. “We then got a call from Samsung saying, you can either wear the uniform, or get your own hotel and flight tickets home,” said Jeff.

Nokia soon stepped in offering to cover for his accommodation for the whole of IFA and his flight home.

Samsung has since emailed Jeff to “sincerely apologise” for his experience in Berlin, admitting “we put you through undue hardship and we are trying to rectify the situation”.”

That was a comfort to them.
