Shocking murder of Korean in Sydney

March 19th, 2008 . by Matt

Right in my neighborhood, less than 10 minutes walk from where I live. I walk past there every day.

A random and unprovoked attack at Sydney’s World Square has left one teenager dead and another young man badly wounded, say police.

It began with an argument between two students and other young men in a hamburger restaurant and ended with the fatal stabbing being caught on surveillance cameras.

It is understood the argument began at the Hungry Jacks restaurant on the corner of Liverpool and George streets and involved two Korean students studying in Sydney and two other men.

The four men then moved up Liverpool Street until they were across the road from Central Local Court, where the two Korean men were stabbed.

Police say they found the two Koreans lying near each other, both suffering multiple stab wounds.

The 19-year-old was taken to St Vincents Hospital where he died a short time later. The other man, aged in his 20s, is in a serious condition at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, police say.

City Central police Commander Mark Murdoch said witnesses saw the alleged attackers get in a cab.

“The critical information that led to the arrest of the two men this morning was supplied by a [cab driver] and without that information it’s doubtful we would have arrested those people so quickly,” he said.

The cab driver contacted police minutes after the stabbing to tell police he had just dropped two men at Redfern train station and the two suspects were arrested at 1.17am.

About 20 security cameras had captured various moments of the incident and Mr Murdoch said the footage would form a large part of the investigation.

He would not confirm whether the attackers were suspected members of an Asian crime gang.

A “larger group” had been involved in the argument but only four people were involved in the actual attack, he said.

“World Square has proved problematic for us in the past, there has been a lot of attention paid to that area by police [and] it has reaped some benefit for us in recent times … until this morning.”

A number of items were found in the taxi, he said.

“People who engage in this type of behaviour care nothing for what surveillance may or may not be in the area. They have a point to prove,” he said.

“It’s clearly an idiotic, absolutely unbelievable and senseless attack that has occurred and robbed one man of his life.”

The attacked appeared to be completely unprovoked, he said.

It was not believed the victims knew their attackers, he said.

Something is going very, very wrong with Sydney these days. I see violent incidents almost all the time now. Even I was attacked on the street. Lets hope the murderers are found.

Daily Telegraph notes that the incident was near the V-bar. Not a place that responsible people would take young and vulnerable Koreans. Though this fight seems to have started at McDonalds.

It sounds like the Coreans and Chinese were fighting about something and somebody lost their head. What a shame.
    .
I hope the Corean who lived gets well. A corean who was attacked in Canada, had her entire family move to Canada as “landed immigrants“, where they live off the fat of government welfare.

The other group of Asians have not been publicly identified.

They could be Vietnamese or any other group likely to frequent a dangerous dive like V Bar. If they were Vietnamese they were probably born in Australia. Which makes them Australian.

Your Canadian observations are not applicable to Australian immigration law which in the past has been much stricter for similar cases.

    The assailants were Chinese.

Two 18-year-old Chinese men were arrested near Redfern train station a short time later, after police broadcast a description of the taxi on police radio.

    Here are some witness accounts:

“He was bleeding from his stomach,” one witness said

“His eyes were rolling back in his head and he was dry gasping for air. There was a taxi driver here, we were all trying to resuscitate him for ages”.

Also suffering multiple stab wounds, another man staggered up Liverpool Street before collapsing outside a Korean Grocery Store in Pitt Street.

A store worker, who did not want to be named, rushed to his aid.

“Two guys came through my store. One falls down, he had blood on his chest,” the worker said.

“He said ‘help me’ but I can’t do anything,” he said.

Party-goers from the adjoining V-bar nightclub tried desperately to revive him.

He remains in a serious condition.

Staff at the store said the man lay injured outside, while another two men ran through the store disrupting produce.

There’s also been another stabbing on the streets of Sydney.

A man is recovering in hospital with a collapsed lung after he was stabbed several times on a Surry Hills street, in inner Sydney.

Police say the 32-year-old was walking along Sophia Lane, near the corner of Foveaux and Riley streets, when he was approached by another man.

The say the man started an argument with him just after 8:30pm (AEDT) yesterday, before stabbing him several times.

The victim was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital, where he was treated for stab wounds and a collapsed lung.

He is in a serious but stable condition.

Police want to speak to a man described as being about 30 years old, with olive skin, a medium build and short brown hair. They say he was wearing a blue T-shirt.

Anyone with information that could help police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Maybe it’s time to invest in a stab-proof vest.

The uniforms, which cost £130 ($311), have been developed amid growing concern about the number of teenagers who have been stabbed to death. … While parents have been busy ordering the tops and blazers for their children, female joggers and men worried about being stabbed also have been keen customers.

The tops don`t come cheap, with a price tag of £65.

To have a school blazer modified to include the protective lining costs £120.

Coreans should never mess around with Chinese. Lets face it, if you put coreans against Chinese, the Chinese will always win. This is just an historic truth. This is always the way it is. Chinese will always dominate Coreans; who for the most part, don’t seem to mind. Apparently these two did mind, and look what happened to them.

    familyguy,
Thank you for telling us what happened to you and Matt. What, you were also attacked? Are you physically doing alright now?
I have been anxiously wondering what happened to Matt. Getting serious facial injuries all of a sudden on the street sounds just horrible. I pray he has a swift recovery, and his face heals properly and completely. It is really upsetting to hear that Matt suffered from repeated attacks in an eery similar fashion in his home country.

21-year-old Korean man, who was stabbed and killed by two Chinese gangs in Sydney on 20th March 2008, was turned out to be a brother of S. Korea’s famous actor “Lee dong-geon”.

Stabbed Korean student ‘robbed of his life’

    Posted Thu Mar 20, 2008 12:48pm AEDT

Police have described the fatal stabbing of a 19-year-old Korean university student in Sydney’s CBD overnight as a senseless act.

Officers were called to the shopping complex at World Square about 1:00am (AEDT) after receiving reports of two men suffering serious injuries.

When they arrived, the found two Korean men lying on the ground with stab wounds. The victims were taken to hospital but the 19-year-old died. The other man is in a serious condition after surgery.

Witnesses told officers the pair had been attacked by two men who fled the scene in a taxi.

Two 18-year-old Chinese men were arrested near Redfern train station a short time later, after police broadcast a description of the taxi on police radio.

Superintendent Mark Murdoch from says the attack was extremely brazen.

“I would think that people who engage in this type of behaviour care nothing for what surveillance may or may not be in a particular area,” he said.

“They have a point to prove whether it’s reputation or trying to establish a reputation.

“It’s clearly an idiotic, absolutely unbelievable and senseless attack that has robbed one man of his life.”

NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione has denied there are not enough officers on Sydney’s streets at night.

Commissioner Scipione says it was not a random attack and there is no need to boost night patrols in the CBD.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Here’s a news clip from the National 9 News about the “Chinese mobs/gangs/villains” killing innocent Korean students in Australia:

The two 18 year olds responsible for the killing were caught by the police. They are Michael Lee and Ivan Wong. Australian Police are trying to determine if they belong to a Chinese gang which is plaguing Sydney’s Asian communities. The suspects admitted that they killed the one Korean (Lee Dong Gun’s brother who died instantly with 14 stab wounds), and seriously wounded another 20 year old Korean student, friend of the deceased. The wounded Korean is in serious condition, fighting for his life. One of the suspect admitted they killed the foreign exchange student because the Koreans were “looking down on them”.

Matt, I hope you get well soon. Yes, something is going very, very wrong with Sydney these days. There’s been another knife attack in Sydney:

A man was stabbed at Lalor Park in Sydney’s west last night, the latest in a spate of knife attacks in the city.

Police say a 33-year-old man returned to his Stevens Street home bleeding heavily from a single puncture wound to the chest about 5.30pm yesterday, four hours after he left to go to the nearby Freeman Road shops.

His housemates called an ambulance and he was taken to Westmead Hospital for treatment to his non life-threatening wound.

Police say the man reported being attacked by an unknown male.

Blacktown police seized several items from the man’s home for forensic examination and are appealing to the public for information about the attack.

Inspector Steve Dale said police had not yet had the chance to interview the man extensively and were trying to piece together where he had been for the four hours he was away from his home.

It was not yet known if the stabbing was a random or premeditated attack.

“We are seeking any public assistance from anyone who witnessed the stabbing to get in touch so we can try to establish the circumstances,” Inspector Dale said.

A Westmead Hospital spokeswoman said the man remained in a stable condition.

The wounding comes just four days after two men were stabbed, one fatally, at the World Square complex in Haymarket, and three days after a 32-year-old man received multiple stab wounds in Surry Hills.

POLICE investigating the stabbing murder of a South Korean student in the World Square complex believe it was carried out by members of a new Triad-style criminal gang, some of whom officers had identified to immigration officials in a request for their deportation.

The Herald has learned that the deportation request, on the grounds of student visa violations, was made the day before last Thursday’s fatal stabbing of the 19-year-old brother of the prominent South Korean actor Lee Dong-gun.

Concerned members of the NSW Asian Crime Squad are understood to have met Department of Immigration officials to detail the activities of the gang that calls itself “Yee Tong”. While police have yet to establish how many members the gang has, those identified to date are from mainland China and many are on study visas.

Yee Tong, whose members are in their late teens to early 20s, emerged in the Sydney CBD in the past year amid rising night-time violence in and around the World Square business and residential complex.

Police intelligence suggests Yee Tong has laid claim to the World Square complex, bounded by George, Liverpool, Goulburn and Pitt streets, as their turf against the long entrenched rival Big Circle- and Sing Wai-stylised Hong Kong Triad gangs in nearby Chinatown.

Police have yet to establish a motive for last week’s attack, which began inside the Hungry Jack’s restaurant in George Street with what appeared to be an argument between two groups

Before we asssume the guilt of this kid, we should hear his side of the story. Lady Justice is blind for a reason.
    .
Coreans run in gangs all over asia. It is not hard to imagine an arrogant snotty nose corean running his mouth off at a chinese kid. Naturally there is no way it is acceptable to murder over this, but what if one of the rich kids pals had a weapon. There was a lot of people and confusion.

Both Wong and Lee are alleged to be members of the Yee Tong triad style gang whom police allege have been preying on fellow foreign students in a stand-over extortion racket.
